Movses Pogossian’s faculty recital celebrates the Naxos release of his “Hommage à Kurtág” CD. In addition to the recording of György Kurtág’s complete Signs, Games, and Messages for solo violin, the CD also includes companion pieces by Gabriela Lena FrankKay RhieJungyoon Wie, and Aida Shirazi, inspired by the great Hungarian composer’s music. Generously commissioned by Justus and Helen Schlichting, they will receive world premieres at the concert, performed alongside several Kurtág miniatures. Also on the program: Zoltan Kodaly’s folk-inspired masterpiece, Duo for Violin and Cello (with distinguished Scottish cellist Niall Brown), and a selection of Béla Bartók’s Duos with UCLA Music Education violin students Kayla Phan, Yidan Sun, Yoosung Lee, Emily Taylor, Raina Markham, Kayla Lee, and alumnus Sam Lorenzini.

The recital is highlighting Music for Fooda musician-led initiative to fight hunger in local communities. All the proceeds from the volunteer in-person and online contributions, as well as “pay what you can” CD sales will be donated to the food services of the Skid Row-based Midnight Mission and Downtown Women’s Center.

Live-stream of the recital will be available here.

This event is made possible by the David and Irmgard Dobrow Fund. Classical music was a passion of the Dobrows, who established a generous endowment at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music to make programs like this possible. We are proud to celebrate this program as part of the 2022 - 23 Dobrow Series.
