A special virtual screening and live conversation among Latin American cinema historian and lecturer about this classic film representing the local Spanish-language film culture that flourished in the 1930s, starring renowned late actor, Fernando Soler, remembered among the Golden Age of Mexican cinema’s greatest.

In this New York-set drama, a boxer (Fernando Soler) discovers that his wife (Luana de Alcañiz) is pregnant when he's released early from prison, and his suspicion leads to tragic results. Produced in the U.S. by Cantabria Films, distributed by Columbia Pictures, and featuring an international cast, Verbena trágica represents the local Spanish-language film culture that flourished in the 1930s and beyond.

Post-screening conversation with Latina/o media and art and Latin American cinema historian Colin Gunckel and UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television lecturer Maria Elena de las Carreras. Moderated by Latin American Cinemateca of Los Angeles program manager and screenwriter Guido Segal.
