UCLA Chancellor’s Council on the Arts 2024 Class Artists Call for Submissions

Submissions are now open for the second-annual Class Artist competition

The Chancellor’s Council on the Arts at UCLA seeks to honor two class artists, one graduate and one undergraduate student whose works showcase the presence and purpose of the arts at UCLA.

The mission of the Chancellor's Council on the Arts is to center the arts in the heart of UCLA's identity and purpose, knowing that the arts enable human connections, motivate and celebrate creativity and curiosity as they nourish communities and foster a more just, equitable and sustainable society

The field is open to artists who work in any medium or discipline who are graduating in 2024 from one of the academic units represented on the Chancellor’s Council on the Arts:

  • UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture
  • UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music
  • UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television
  • UCLA College, Division of Humanities
  • UCLA College, Division of Social Sciences

Work must be original, but submissions may come from any works created during your time as a student at UCLA. Submissions from all artistic disciplines are eligible--music composition and performance, writing and spoken word, theatrical and dance performance, film productions, digital and video arts, sculpture, fine arts, technical and bio arts, graphic or architectural design.

To nominate yourself (or a classmate) please complete and submit the enclosed questionnaire as well as a link or upload of materials for review by April 1.  (Use your UCLA gmail account).

The two class artists will be selected by a panel of arts alumni. Honorees will be contacted by early May.

We will interview and record each student for a video project. This will be shared as part of a commencement storytelling package for UCLA Newsroom and that will be shared on social media. Honorees will receive an award of $1500 each generously provided by the academic units from the Chancellor’s Council on the Arts.

Last year's inaugural winners both hailed from UCLA's School of Theater, Film & Television.

Graduate student Jahmil Eady was honored for her short film "The Bond" and undergraduate student Paravi Das for her original song "Broken English." Four students were also celebrated with honorable mentions.

Read more about their work in this UCLA Newsroom article.

We expect to receive a large number of submissions and anticipate it will be difficult to select just two of our talented graduate and undergraduates. We hope that by instituting this practice as part of our annual commencement storytelling package that we will offer our campus community a glimpse into the artistic process and understand the role that the arts play in enriching our lives.
