Bubby’s Kitchen is the story of one young woman’s struggle to live up to her grandparents’ incredible legacy. When 30,000 Jews came out of the forests at the end of WWII; among them were her grandparents, Yudis and Motke Ginsburg, who with the Bielski and Iskra Partisan units resisted tirelessly against the Nazis.
Bubby’s Kitchen explores the themes of family legacy, self-identity, self-realization, and the personal synthesis of Jewish history against the backdrop of the Holocaust and modern-day America.
Over the course of the show Shira becomes seven different characters, each a member of her family that played a significant role in shaping her life’s journey. Through watching Shira discover what it means to be a living legacy of the Partisans while staying true to her own desires and destiny, the show questions and suggests how all of us move forward from the past to the present. The show is set in the current day and in flashback moments in her Bubby’s kitchen in Troy, NY.
