Installed in the 100-inch telescope dome at Mount Wilson Observatory, Of Sea and Sky includes an immersive video work by Méndez projected within the dome and large-scale print works by Nowlin displayed along sections of the dome floor encircling the massive telescope.

Of Sea and Sky connects themes of truth-seeking, space cosmology and Earth ecology, as well as sensitivities to the diverse histories of human and animal knowledge-gathering and relations.

Stephen Nowlin’s Chapel Studio practice probes astronomy, cosmology, and ontological perspectives emerging from the pairing of contemporary art and science. The Studio borrows its name from structures of meditation and reverence but has nothing to do with churches or religion, or fictions of the non-existent supernatural. It’s a place to ponder and make, as science shapes our knowledge and embrace of the natural universe.

Rebeca Méndez is an interdisciplinary artist and professor in the Design Media Arts department of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. Her works examine reciprocal relationships and environmental justice in a multi-species world amid climate change, mass extinction, and a ravaging extractivist society, and her research-based works manifest as immersive video and sound installations, film, and performance. She is also the founder and director of the Counterforce Lab at UCLA.

The exhibition Of Sea and Sky is made possible by a grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance.
