Exquisite Corpse Fall 2024

A community poem from Welcome Week at UCLA
Closeup of a wish bird...part of a community art project.

At a series of events during welcome week, we asked students staff and faculty to contribute one line each to a poem. They could not see the line that was written before and had no idea what line would come after. With gratitude to everyone who participated in this and other artmaking activities to kick off the school year, we present our completed work.

Exquisite Corpse UCLA Fall 2024

My body can’t tell the difference between anxiety and excitement

The clouds surround me, hazy but fluffy

Hair tangled like seaweed on a beach

Unfortunately, the ride persisted, nature only called louder

Hoping all the good to people I love

I hope to feel safe

Inspired by meeting new people

Perhaps one day I could see you again

The whirlwind of discoveries in this new home

The world will only collapse if you let it, so try your best to uphold your part

U see arts in L.A.

I’m confused and tired after the first few days of college

Life is so beautiful, that sometimes it seems true

Ecstatic and not looking—just sayin’

This poem is a corpse, exquisite

It is deceptively hot today, I’m so sweaty

The heat piercing my skin. I am alive

Don’t be resigned. Break out!

Hearing the sounds of new Bruins reminds us why

Mentality is the only thing that defines you. Be ambitious

Shadows fall, rainbows fade

I love you but I’ve chosen darkness

We have this incredible opportunity

The smog washes over the blue in a new city, but I hope what we find here is cataclysmic

Everything is a circle

This week, this week, I’ve been thinking about true TIME, how precious it is, TickTock…how to make the most of it…it passes…too fast…so make it count.

Solar winds move the energy

Seeing everyone back on campus makes me sick to my stomach

My thumb is feeling the cold

The cat ran across the room

And the weather turned sour and wet

Mighty Casey has struck out!!!

Beautiful oops. Trust the universe

And as my heart was breaking, I heard his voice.

Swimming in a luminous, living rainbow on the Great Barrier that connects us all

So much love astounds in every crevice of our steps

Sunshine, art and beauty give strength

Movement is a beautiful thing, in all its forms

Falling leaves against an autumn of well-worn pages

Art at the start
